Restoration in Motion: Bridging Land, Water, and People
The 12th World Conference on Ecological Restoration (SER2027) will explore integrated approaches to ecological restoration across landscapes, seascapes, and communities. The conference theme reflects both the natural continuum that restoration work must follow, from mountain catchments to coastal waters and deep seas, and the human systems, knowledge, policy, finance, and culture, that determine whether restoration succeeds and endures.
SER2027 invites us to consider restoration not as isolated interventions but as connected work: land, freshwater, and seascapes shape and depend on one another, and lasting outcomes require bridging science with practice, policy with governance, and technical knowledge with the lived experience of the communities who care for these places.
The conference theme guides the program’s nine thematic series, spanning Lands, Freshwaters, and Seascapes in Motion with a cross-cutting series Bridging knowledge, management, policy, finance, socioeconomic impact, and culture. SER2027 welcomes contributions on all aspects of restoration research, practice, and policy, particularly those that integrate ecological and social dimensions, advance standards-based restoration, and support long-term outcomes.
SER2027 will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, where the Tagus River meets the Atlantic. A landscape that sits at the intersection of land, freshwater, and ocean, and where ecosystem restoration is directly tied to community resilience and climate adaptation. The SER2027 logo, a figure with flowing hair that turns to water and whose form frames the land and sky, echoes this same convergence of people, water, and land, rendered in a gradient that moves from deep blue to coastal teal.
SER2027 is organized in collaboration with the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER) and regional partners including the European Chapter of the Society for Ecological Restoration (SER-Europe), A Sociedade Portuguesa de Ecologia (SPECO), Associação para a Investigação e Desenvolvimento de Ciências (FCiências.ID), Universidade de Lisboa (ULisboa), and A Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa (Ciências ULisboa).
